Odds to win AL Rookie of the Year: Taj Bradley stands out for Rays
It's very early, but Taj Bradley has been excellent so far for the Tampa Bay Rays. Photo by Chris O'Meara/AP.

A little over a month into a new MLB season, let's check in on the fresh crop of AL Rookie of the Year candidates.

The latest: Boston's Masataka Yoshida was lingering near the top of the board to start the year, and now he owns the shortest odds on this market. We're keen on Logan Allen out in Cleveland, and Tampa Bay's Taj Bradley has done everything right so far.

Best AL Rookie of the Year odds

The favourite: Masataka Yoshida (+250)

Yoshida is unlike most rookies in that he already entered this season with seven years of pro baseball experience.

All of that came in Japan's NPB, which is commonly considered the second-best baseball league in the world. It's never easy to know how NPB stars like Yoshida will translate in the majors, but it seems he's finally finding his groove.

Entering May 6, Yoshida has built an MLB-best 15-game hitting streak, batting .433 in that span. He's up to a .937 OPS for the year now, versus a .560 OPS prior to the start of the streak.

Frankly, a +250 price point for that level of production isn't too bad. He was sitting at +350 when we last checked in, and that was before he really began to heat up. You might think you're buying high because of how hot he's been lately, but the price point is still palatable.

Other AL Rookie of the Year choices

Best value: Taj Bradley (+2,300)

The Rays lost one Cy Young contender recently, as Jeffrey Springs is likely headed for Tommy John surgery. But they might just have another one holstered in Bradley.

OK, that's premature. But Bradley has been quite good in a tiny sample (three starts), which caused him to pop up in the heart of this leaderboard.

Bradley is 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA and 23 strikeouts in just 15.1 innings. His fastball touches 98 and headlines a four-pitch mix that a limited subset of batters clearly hasn't figured out yet.

Though Bradley has come out of nowhere on our odds leaderboard, the expectations for him are sky-high. He's listed as the No. 18 overall prospect at MLB Pipeline and also the No. 1 prospect in the Rays' system.

Player to watch: Logan Allen (+3,500)

Cleveland fans should already be familiar with ballplayers named Logan Allen, as the Guardians recently had a reliever by that name for parts of four seasons.

But this Logan Allen is a starter, and he's looking like a darn good one so far.

Granted, it's only been two outings for Allen, but the 24-year-old has racked up 16 strikeouts in 11.0 innings — with just three runs allowed.

The lefty's fastball sits in the low-90s, but his sweeper and changeup both have the potential to be plus pitches. Sometimes velocity is overrated anyway.
