Argentina vs. Mexico World Cup picks and odds: Expect Messi and Argentina to fill the net

Argentina's 36-game unbeaten streak was snapped on Tuesday, and it now faces Mexico with crucial Group C points on the line.

The pregame narrative: Argentina is reeling after its shocking 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia while Mexico escaped a testy match against Poland unscathed after the latter missed a 86' penalty kick. Winning this game would set up either team nicely heading into their final match.

Argentina vs. Mexico World Cup picks

Best Bet: Argentina over 2.5 goals (-130)

Argentina was held to just one goal on Tuesday, but we're expecting fireworks from Lionel Messi and Co. in a must-win game.

Anything less than three points here would be a disaster for the Argentines, and their offence should respond accordingly. La Albiceleste had scored three-plus goals in five straight games prior to Tuesday’s upset.

They probably should have found the net more than once in that game, too. Argentina had 2.2 expected goals against Saudi Arabia, on the back of 15 shots — six which found the target — and 69% possession.

Mexico is a stout defensive squad but we think Argentina is more than capable of cracking its back line. While the Mexicans allowed just eight goals in their CONCACAF qualifiers they conceded two goals against both Canada and the United States, who were by far their best opponents in that competition.

Look for Messi to lead the way up front alongside Lautaro Martinez. We’d also expect Paulo Dybala to draw into this game for the Argentines. Roma’s star forward has scored 7 goals in 12 appearances for his club this season.

Key stat: Argentina is averaging 2.7 goals over its 10 games this year.

Quick picks

Both teams to score (+108): Argentina’s offence is a known commodity but its defence has us a little more concerned. Its usually stout centre-back combo of Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi had a dreadful performance against KSI and we’re not sure they’ll fare much better against Mexico.

Mexico scored 17 goals in its 14 CONCACAF qualifying games and also dominated play against Poland. The Tricolor had 61% of possession and found the net on four of its 11 shots on Tuesday.

Over 2.5 goals (+104): This is a natural accompaniment to our previous two picks. Argentina has gone over this total in each of its last six games and has the top-end talent to hold up its end of the bargain.

The Mexicans have gone over this mark in three of their last four games, scoring seven goals in those contests.
