Best Canada World Cup bets: Expect Jonathan David to lead the way in goals

Canada will be participating in the World Cup for the first time in 36 years. That's cause for celebration — and in our case — a couple of wagers.

The pre-tournament narrative: Canada is due to end its World Cup goalless drought and Jonathan David is the best bet to help the team get that done. Meanwhile, Stephen Eustaquio has broken out as an elite midfielder and holds value to lead the country in assists.

Canada World Cup bets

Best Bet: Canada over 2.5 tournament goals (+110)

The Canadians have never scored a World Cup goal but we expect that to change this year.

The Canadians breezed through CONCACAF qualifying, scoring the most goals of any team in the competition (23). They netted a total of six goals in four games against Mexico and the United States.

Those are solid teams but the competition in the World Cup will be tougher.

Canada's first game is against Belgium. Winning that match might be out of the question but finding the net is not. The Canadians are currently -130 to score which makes sense, considering Belgium has conceded a goal in 10 of its past 12 games dating back to last year's World Cup qualifiers.

If the Reds can pick up a goal against No. 2-ranked Belgium, we love this bet's chances of hitting.

Even if Canada is shut out in that game — which we think is unlikely — we're still bullish on our chances of cashing this bet. Croatia is a solid team but Canada has the firepower to crack its defence.

Canada's best chance will come against Morocco, though.

Morocco conceded three goals to the United States when they played in June and we like Canada's chances of putting up similar results. The Moroccans also allowed at least one goal in each of their five matches before that game against the Americans.

Key stat: Canada scored in 11 of its 14 CONCACAF qualifying games.

Quick picks

Jonathan David top Canadian goalscorer (+200): If Canada's going to be scoring goals, you can bet David will be involved. Literally.

The 22-year-old has scored 22 goals for Canada in just 34 caps. His 0.64 goals-per-game ratio is the best in national team history among players with five-plus goals.

David has also been thriving in Ligue 1 this season. He's buried nine goals in 15 appearances for Lille (most on the team) and is breaking out as one of the top young talents in that league.

Stephen Eustaquio top Canadian assists (+1,100): This is a bit of a long shot but we like Eustaquio's chances of getting the job done.

He's been thriving for Porto in the Primeira Liga. Eustaquio currently has four assists, tied for second in the league. He was named Primeira Liga midfielder of the month in September.

Eustaquio will be feeding the likes of David, Cyle Larin and Alphonso Davies up front. Bank on him racking up assists.
