Connor McDavid goal total odds

Scoring 65 goals isn't an easy task in the NHL, as one would imagine.

Since 2000, Alex Ovechkin is the only player to author a 65-goal campaign. He hit the impressive benchmark during the 2007-08 season when he tallied 65 markers exactly.

Over the same time period, only two other players besides Ovi have been able to reach 60: Steven Stamkos (2011-12) and Auston Matthews (2021-22).

Despite each being among the greatest goal-scorers of their generation, all three have reached the mark once and never again.

So how does McDavid stack up, and is 60 or even 65 goals in his reasonable range of outcomes?

The best way to gauge that is by taking his goals per game average and extrapolating that over an 82-game season. McDavid (54 goals) has played in all 66 games for Edmonton, meaning he's averaging 0.82 goals per contest.

If he maintains this pace over the remainder of the season, he'll hit 67.

Let's now compare McDavid's numbers through 66 games to Ovechkin, Stamkos and Matthews in their 60-plus goal seasons to see where he stacks up compared to his peers.

PlayersGoals through 66 games
Ovechkin (2007-08)49
Stamkos (2011-12)48
Matthews (2021-22)56

McDavid is outpacing Stamkos and Ovechkin and is slightly below Matthews' pace.

Considering McDavid is on track for 67 goals, the -118 odds attached to this bet make it a fair wager. He's shooting the puck far more now than ever, producing the best shots per-game rate since entering the league (4.38).

Nobody is going to put a rampant ending to this season past the Oilers superstar, and he's more than capable of elevating his game and surpassing this total.
