Odds to land Kevin Durant: Raptors among top teams involved in KD sweepstakes

It wouldn't be a proper NBA offseason without a bonafide superstar on the move, so let's all thank Kevin Durant for requesting a trade from the Brooklyn Nets.

The latest: Brooklyn's big three of Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden went up in smoke with the exit of Harden. Could KD be the next one out? While it appears more than likely the Nets retain Durant, teams like the Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns have the assets to make a trade happen.

Best odds to land Kevin Durant

The favourite: Brooklyn Nets (-500)

After nearly a month of trade buzz, it appears the Nets will likely retain Durant's services for the 2022-23 season.

Brooklyn has reportedly been fielding offers from a variety of teams but has made it clear the price for KD will be steep. So steep, in fact, that there hasn't been an offer the Nets have liked. After all, the Nets have committed to this championship window with the re-signing of Irving, so how is one supposed to replace Durant and remain competitive at the same time?

In some ways, it seems as though this bridge has already been burned. But the Nets are operating as if the superstar is returning to the Barclays Center come October.

If KD stays with the Nets, they'll remain a title contender. And with Irving's COVID-related holdout coming to an apparent close, fans could finally see a full season of the elite duo.

After constructing this super team three years ago, Durant and Irving have played just 44 games together.

Raptors odds at landing Durant

Odds: Toronto Raptors (+800)

The Raptors emerged as serious players in the Durant sweepstakes early on, and they were among the teams rumoured to land the 12-time All-Star.

However, Toronto's odds have slowly shifted from +240 all the way to +800, as all talk has gone quiet on the Durant front.

Can the Raptors provide a package to get KD? Absolutely. Will they do it? That's another question.

Masai Ujiri has proven himself to be one of the finest basketball minds in the NBA, highlighted by the deal that brought Kawhi Leonard to Toronto ahead of the team's championship run in 2019.

If Ujiri believes he can give up the right assets for Durant, he'll probably do it, but it seems unlikely the trade package for Durant would include either Pascal Siakam or Scottie Barnes.

This trade would be centred on picks — lots of them. We saw Rudy Gobert garner four first-round picks from the Minnesota Timberwolves in addition to five players, including Patrick Beverley. It's clear that it's going to cost a king's ransom to land Durant.

Toronto possesses all its picks until the end of the decade (with the exception of next year's second-rounder). If the Raptors hold firm on Siakam and Barnes, they'll likely have to give up four firsts in addition to key players such as OG Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr. and/or Precious Achiuwa.

Teams to watch

There are several other teams in the mix for Durant, so let's take a brief look at them:

  • The Heat are +800 to land Durant. Miami was reportedly one of the teams on KD's preferred trade list. With a plethora of young talent and a strong core, this certainly could make sense.
  • The Celtics have emerged as a serious candidate to land Durant, at least that's what the odds indicate. Boston went from +3,000 to +400 in a span of 11 days, so maybe something involving Jaylen Brown is cooking in Beantown.
  • The Suns have re-emerged in the Durant sweepstakes, shifting from +1,000 to +400 over the past 10 days.
