The Detroit Lions hit the road for the first time this season to face the Minnesota Vikings.

The pregame narrative: The Lions enter Week 3 off a win while the Vikings were beaten down on Monday Night Football. It's early in the season, but this has major implications on the NFC North standings.

Lions vs. Vikings Week 3 picks

Best bet: Vikings -5.5 (-124)

The public perception for these two teams couldn't be more different heading into Week 3.

You won't find anyone who has a bad thing to say about Detroit. From the moment the first episode of Hard Knocks aired all the way through to its win against the Washington Commanders last Sunday, the team's been a public darling.

But let's pump the breaks on the Lions love fest. Detroit's played both of its games at home, and it's not like it took down one of the NFL's elite teams. The Lions beat the Commanders and were outscored 27-14 over the final two quarters of the game.

Additionally, Detroit's defence has been horrendous. It ranks 31st in the NFL with 32.5 points allowed per game, and has conceded 273.5 passing yards against per contest — the fifth-worst mark in the league.

The narratives around the Vikings, however, are the same as they've always been after Monday's primetime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But Minnesota gets to return home, which is a major advantage for this team.

Key stat: The Vikings are 6-3 against the spread at home since the start of 2021 compared to 3-7 on the road.

Quick picks

Vikings over 29.5 points (-124): Detroit's defence has been among the worst in the NFL this season, and it's benefitted from playing two home games thus far. We're betting on it having all sorts of troubles on the road in Week 3.

In addition to allowing the second-most points in the league and the fifth-most passing yards, opponents have converted on 53.1% of third downs against the Lions, which is the third-worst mark. The Vikings won't have any issues marching up and down the field, making them a strong bet to put up points.

Dalvin Cook over 79.5 rushing yards (-113): The NFL is a reactionary league. In Week 2, Cook handled just six carries and turned those into 17 yards. After sparsely using the team's top back, head coach Kevin O'Connell said he would have liked to lean on the run game more following the loss.

Week 3 presents a golden opportunity for the rookie coach to do just that. Detroit ranks 25th with 304 rushing yards allowed while allowing opponents to earn a whopping 5.1 yards per carry. Expect Cook to handle the ball a ton against the Lions.
