At +1,000, the Maple Leafs are tied for the third-shortest odds to win the Stanley Cup. They were previously alone in third after jumping the Carolina Hurricanes, but some recent inconsistencies have them tied.
The Boston Bruins (+350) and the Colorado Avalanche (+600) are the only squads ahead of the Maple Leafs.
Toronto is a middling 3-3 across the team's last six. Although the Buds have earned some impressive wins during this stretch over the Hurricanes and Florida Panthers, there are a pair of puzzling losses to the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders mixed in as well.
Goaltending is a concern making its way to the forefront, as neither Matt Murray nor Ilya Samsonov has been overly impressive. Murray owns a lacklustre .875 save percentage across his last seven appearances, while Samsonov's .891 mark over his last five leaves a lot to be desired.
One reason for optimism is the recent success of Auston Matthews. The elite sniper is rounding into form, potting six goals and 12 points across his last eight outings.
A recent move that turned heads was head coach Sheldon Keefe's decision to scratch Morgan Rielly in the team's most recent contest against the Panthers. The squad earned a 6-2 victory, but it's fair to wonder how the veteran blueliner will receive being scratched.
Toronto visits the Hurricanes and Nashville Predators for a pair of weekend contests.
