Odds to win the college football national championship: Georgia still favoured, Miami surging

Miami had 66-to-1 title odds in the preseason but saw a nice bump after winning in Week 1. Photo by John Raoux/AP.

At long last, the college football season is underway and we have some notable line movement after Week 1.

The latest: Schools like Notre Dame and Miami (FL) are pushing their way up the board while Clemson and Texas A&M fall back. But at the top, Georgia and Ohio State are still well ahead of the pack.

Here are the latest college football national championship odds for 2024-25.

Best college football national championship odds

The favourites: Georgia Bulldogs (+225)

Athens, Georgia is a factory for NFL talent, which means the team is bound to have some notable roster churn from one year to the next.

The biggest departure from last year's team is All-American tight end Brock Bowers, who had his name called early on Day 1 of the NFL Draft. But quarterback Carson Beck is back for his senior season, which will provide some stability for Kirby Smart's group.

Georgia has 11-plus wins in six of the past seven years, and it won back-to-back national championships in the 2021 and '22 seasons. Between the hedges, greatness is expected.

The No. 1-ranked Bulldogs dismantled No. 14 Clemson in Week 1. But the Dawgs still have three Grade-A road matchups that should be circled in red ink on the calendar:

  • Sept. 28: @ No. 5 Alabama
  • Oct. 19 @ No. 4 Texas
  • Nov. 9 @ No. 6 Ole Miss

Other national championship candidates

Best value: Utah Utes (+5,000)

If you're looking for a long shot that could follow the mould of last year's Washington Huskies, Utah might be that team.

Quarterback Cameron Rising, who was in the same recruiting class as Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, is back in Salt Lake City for one last ride. He missed last season recovering from a knee injury but starred in 2022, throwing for 26 TDs and over 3,000 yards in 13 games while adding six scores on the ground.

In his season debut, Rising threw for 254 yards and five TDs in the first half. On just 15 attempts.

Utah just joined a very winnable Big 12 conference that just lost Texas and Oklahoma. The Utes, who are favoured to win the Big 12, only have one road game in 2024 against an above-.500 team from last year.

CFB championship notes

  • The Cam Ward era in Coral Gables, Florida is off to a fantastic start. The transfer quarterback went into The Swamp in Gainesville and threw for 385 yards in a blowout win. As a result, the Hurricanes went from 66-to-1 title odds all the way to 25-to-1 ... and they're the ACC favourites.
  • After grinding out a road win over No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 7 Notre Dame has paved a nice pathway to the College Football Playoff (and yes, I know I'm saying that after just one week). The Irish don't play another preseason ranked opponent until November.
