Odds to win Super Bowl 59: Chiefs are favoured to complete three-peat after hot start

The NFL season has begun and the top of the Super Bowl odds board is littered with the usual suspects.

The pregame narrative: The Kansas City Chiefs are attempting something no team has accomplished in the Super Bowl era — a three-peat. KC is favoured and began with big wins over the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals. The San Francisco 49ers are next on the board while the Detroit Lions hold value.

The betting favourite

The favourites: Kansas City Chiefs (+450)

As the Chiefs marched to their fourth Super Bowl appearance in five seasons — and their third win — the primary knock on them was a lack of receiving threats.

That didn't stop them from winning the title, though. And it certainly doesn't look like much of an issue this year.

Kansas City spent its first-round pick on speedy wideout Xavier Worthy, who had the highest NFL combine athleticism grade among WR draftees.

Worthy scored twice in the season opener but it's been Rashee Rice taking firm control of the WR1 spot. He has over 175 receiving yards in the first two games.

Travis Kelce has started slow but is still one of the best tight ends in the league.

L'Jarius Sneed's departure aside, last year's No. 2-ranked defence (in both scoring and yardage) is largely intact and looked rabid against Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow.

With Mahomes under centre, the Chiefs are always going to like their chances. But they've also built a legitimately scary team around him, and a three-peat is absolutely on the table.

Bills' Super Bowl odds

Buffalo Bills (+1,100)

At home, with a lead entering the fourth quarter, Buffalo had a golden opportunity to knock off Kansas City and ascend to the AFC championship for just the second time since the early-90s.

But that was last year, and now, the Josh Allen revenge tour might be on.

The Bills narrowly escaped the Arizona Cardinals at home in Week 1 when Allen put the team on his back with four total touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) to steal a win.

The following week, Buffalo demolished the Miami Dolphins at Hardrock Stadium 31-10.

Allen is one of the best in the game and has made the most of a completely new receiving corps. The defence looks competent and the division should be winnable, which means a home playoff game in front of Bills Mafia.

Super Bowl 59 betting notes

  • The 49ers laid a beating on the New York Jets to open the season but fell to 1-1 after losing to Sam Darnold and the Vikings in Minnesota. Things are getting hairy on the injury front with Christian McCaffrey placed on the IR but the team should be able to tread water until his return.
  • The Texans feel like a trendy pick at 12-to-1. They boast the 2023 Rookie of the Year winners on both sides of the ball in C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson, and they shelled out some draft capital to add Diggs to an already talented WR room. As the favourites to repeat in the AFC South, the Texans are on a feasible path to host at least one playoff game.
  • Philadelphia's odds have been shortening and now sit at +1,000. The Birds collapsed in 2023 after a 10-1 start to the year but looked solid in their opener versus the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. New addition Saquon Barkley rumbled for three touchdowns as the offence put up 34 points. The defence is still a question mark, though.
  • Perhaps you're still getting used to the idea of the Lions (+1,400) being genuine Super Bowl contenders. But it's true, and they don't seem to be going anywhere. Detroit addressed its biggest need in the draft, snagging cornerback Terrion Arnold in the first round. The team lost a close game at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2 so now might be a good time to buy the dip.
  • The AFC North is shaping up to be the deepest division in the NFL but only the Pittsburgh Steelers remain undefeated. They're 50-to-1 alongside the Cleveland Browns, who are 1-1. The Cincinnati Bengals (+1,800) and Baltimore. Ravens (+1,500) are both 0-2 but should rebound.
