Canada vs. India preview

As of Thursday, Canada is technically still alive at the T20 cricket World Cup. But a path to advancement is almost non-existent.

First, Ireland would need to beat the U.S. on Friday morning. And then the Canadians would need to pull off a humongous upset over India, a team with staggering -5,000 odds to win. Finally, Ireland would need to win again (this time against Pakistan).

India showed its resolve in a six-run win over Pakistan last weekend. The Men in Blue had less than a 5.0% chance to win at one point, according to ESPN Cricinfo data, but found a way to win behind a 42-run performance from Rishabh Pant.

With a 3-0 record, India has already secured its spot in the Super Eight. The pre-tournament favourites are still the team to beat.

Unfortunately, Canada and India may not bowl a single ball on Saturday. Their matchup is at risk of being washed out.

Lauderhill, Florida, is under a flood watch that remains in effect through Friday evening. Sri Lanka and Nepal were supposed to play at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium on Tuesday, but the game was called off.

If a similar fate comes for Canada and India, Canada's first T20 World Cup tournament will end quietly.

Cricket odds as of 4:00 p.m. ET on 06/13/2024.

Canada had a rough go of things last time out, scoring just 106 runs and losing by seven wickets against Pakistan. The lone bright spot was Aaron Johnson, who banked 52 runs for the Canadians.

He now has six half-centuries in 19 career matches in T20 play. And he carries +550 odds to do it again on Saturday.

Keep in mind that India has yet to allow a batter to accrue more than 31 runs so far at this tournament.

As was the case for Canada's match against Pakistan, every Indian cricketer has shorter player-of-the-match odds than any Canadian cricketer.

Led by Virat Kohli, a trio of Men in Blue hold odds of +650 or shorter to be named player of the match.
