Two teams in the hunt for the Grey Cup meet to open the 2024 CFL season.
The pregame narrative: The Toronto Argonauts will be without starting quarterback Chad Kelly for the first nine games of the season but their defence should remain one of the best in the league. That is why my best bet for their game with the BC Lions is under 47 points.

Lions vs. Argonauts best bet
Best Bet: Under 47 points (-110)
The Argos offence will be different heading into this season. At least for the first nine games anyway without Kelly under centre.
Toronto also lost its starting running back and arguably best offensive player in AJ Ouellette. He rushed for 1000-plus yards and recorded 10 total touchdowns in 2023.
The Lions provide many challenges and could run away with this game if they are clicking but there is a reason the Argonauts are still tied for the second shortest odds to win the Grey Cup with BC.
And that is their defence which should be just as effective as last season where the unit was able to hold opponents to the third-fewest points in the CFL (396), just 19 more than the league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers (377).
Toronto also led the CFL in defensive interceptions with 28, per footballdb.com. If they can force turnovers off the Lions, it could still be a struggle to convert those opportunities into points.
Taking the under also has its benefits in Week 1 as teams could still be figuring out their identity.
I'm expecting Toronto's offence to be slow out of the gate but to account for its strong defence, the under is the play here.
Key stat: Both teams were inside the top five for the fewest points allowed last season.
