Wells Fargo Championship odds and best bets: Bet on Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood at Quail Hollow

The Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow is this week and one huge name is missing from the field.

The latest: Scottie Scheffler — winner of four of his last five starts, including the Masters — is expecting the birth of his first child. With the world No. 1 sidelined it's fair to say this event is wide open. I'm backing Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood to step up and seize the opportunity.

Check out our Wells Fargo Championship odds and best bets for the tournament beginning on May 9.

Rory McIlroy is the favourite with Scheffler sidelined.

The Northern Irishman is two weeks removed from winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with his partner, Shane Lowry, who holds +4,000 odds.

McIlroy has won this event three times and lost in a playoff in 2012. He has the best adjusted average strokes gained at Quail Hollow of anyone in the field, according to DataGolf.

Ludvig Aberg, who was around +1,200 to win this event was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury.

Three other players hold odds shorter than 20-to-1 including last year's champion, Wyndham Clark.

Clark probably wishes Scheffler missed time earlier this year because he's finished runner-up to the World No. 1 twice (Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship).

Taylor Pendrith is a 90-to-1 longshot. He gained entry after winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and is one of six Canadians playing. Corey Conners holds the shortest odds of that group.

Wells Fargo Championship best bets

Thomas top-20 finish (+110) & to win (+2,800): One of Thomas' two major victories came at Quail Hollow when he won the 2017 PGA Championship. It's safe to say he likes this place.

He's made three starts at this course since and finished T21, T26 and T14. But none of those iterations of this tournament has a field this small. Only 70 players are teeing it up this week, meaning Thomas will have to beat out nearly half as many competitors.

JT has been volatile this year but he's coming off a T5 finish in his last start at the RBC Heritage. The putter is a definite concern but it's looking like his ball-striking is all the way back.

Thomas ranks seventh in strokes gained: approach (+0.712) and eighth in strokes gained: tee-to-green (+1.135).

Fleetwood top-20 finish (-110) & to win (+2,200): Fleetwood has never won a PGA Tour event but I'm bullish on that changing this week.

The Englishman has been money in 2024 with a win in Dubai on the DP World Tour and a T3 at the Masters in April. Looking back further, Fleetwood has 16 top-20 finishes in his last 25 starts.

That success has been spurred by elite around-the-green play and solid driving. Finding fairways at Quail Hollow is important and Fleetwood ranks third in driving accuracy (79.1%).

He's also played well at this event lately with a T5 last year and a T14 the year before that.
