The Hart Trophy race is far from over, and there's a new name atop the board. 

The latest: Auston Matthews' recent cold spell has dropped him down the Hart Trophy odds leaderboard. Instead, Nathan MacKinnon now holds down the top spot.

Best odds to win the Hart Trophy

The favourite: Nathan MacKinnon

Stopping MacKinnon has been an impossible task all season long.

The superstar forward is running roughshod over the opposition. He leads the NHL with 111 points, as of March 11, and has recorded at least one point in all 32 of Colorado's home games this season.

MacKinnon has upped his output as the Avalanche fight for first in the Central Division. He's riding a 12-game point streak with 26 total points during this stretch.

The centre is on pace for 140 points which would be the second-most in a single season since the start of the 2000-01 season.

Other Hart Trophy choices

Auston Matthews

Matthews has cooled off a bit but his definition of cool is different than most.

The Maple Leafs superstar only has two goals in his last six games. This recent dip, of course, came after a stretch where he had 19 goals in 17 outings.

He has 54 goals and is on pace for 69. No player has hit the 70-goal plateau since Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne in 1992-93, so if he can just up his production slightly over the final 18 games he can become the first in a very long time.

Scoring 70 goals would be the most impressive accomplishment of any player in the league and certainly put him in the Hart conversation.
