Odds to win the World Series: Dodgers still lead the way, Astros clawing back

The Los Angeles Dodgers were World Series favourites when the season began, and nothing has changed nearly two months later.

The latest: L.A. has the biggest division lead in MLB and is seeking its 11th NL West title in 12 years. Of course, the star-studded team is seeking to go a lot further than that, too. In the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays have plummeted from their preseason standing, while two division foes have soared.

Here are the latest World Series odds for the 2024 season.

Best World Series odds

The favourite: Los Angeles Dodgers (+300)

It was a spendy winter for the Dodgers, who committed more than $1 billion in future salary to its offseason acquisitions.

Chief among those acquisitions was two-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani, who bats between Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to compose a trio of MVP winners atop the batting order.

On the pitching side, Tyler Glasnow has stepped in to be a Cy Young contender from Day 1.

Let's sum it up this way: The Dodgers are second in OPS (.768) and fourth in ERA (3.32). Good luck finding a weakness.

With 100-plus wins in each of the past four full seasons, the Dodgers have proven several times over that they are a well-oiled machine in the regular season.

Aside from a World Series title in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, though, L.A. has struggled to meet expectations in the playoffs.

The team has only one playoff win across its past two postseasons, bowing out quickly in the NLDS both times.

Blue Jays World Series odds

Blue Jays (+6,000)

The Blue Jays had a dream of signing Ohtani, but when that died, no backup plan looked nearly as enticing.

But execution on some backup plan would've been nice. Instead, a quiet winter has unsurprisingly led to a quiet showing from the offence.

Toronto is 23rd in runs per game (4.00), and key stars like Bo Bichette and George Springer are grossly underperforming.

On the pitching side, the Blue Jays look enviably deep in their rotation once again. But that is often outdone by an inept offence and a bullpen that ranks 28th in ERA (4.77).

In a division that is tough throughout — and led by a two-headed monster at the top — it's not too early to fear that the Blue Jays (26-29) are a risk to miss the playoffs.

World Series notes

  • The aforementioned two-headed monster in the AL East consists of the Yankees (+500) and Orioles (+700), who have the best odds among AL teams. Entering May 30, the Yankees had the best OPS in the majors (.770)
  • Despite having the best record in the majors, the Phillies (+600) are still only tied for third on the World Series odds leaderboard. Breakouts from Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm and Ranger Suarez have really helped the Phils, who lost in the World Series two years ago and finished one game short of the Fall Classic last year.
  • If you want to participate in the Astros' buy-low window, your time could be running out. The Astros (+1,100) are still looking like a value relative to their preseason odds as they claw their way back into contention.
