NHL playoff best bets April 24: Bet on Dallas to level the series, take the over in Edmonton

One moneyline pick and one over are my best bets for Wednesday's NHL playoff games.

The pregame narrative: The Dallas Stars lost a nailbiter to the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 but I expect them to get on back against the reigning Stanley Cup champs. Elsewhere, Connor McDavid and Co. should do their part to hit the over in Edmonton.

Check out my NHL best bets for April 24.

NHL best bets

Best Bet: Stars 60-minute moneyline (-103)

Vegas jumped out to an early lead over Dallas in Game 1 and never looked back, winning the opener 4-3.

But the Stars dominated play, out-shooting their competition 29-15 while generating 54.74% of even-strength chances, according to Natural Stat Trick.

An uncharacteristically poor performance from Jake Oettinger sunk the home side. I would be shocked if he had another stinker tonight.

Oettinger posted a respectable 2.72 GAA this season to pair with a .905 save percentage, and he really caught fire down the homestretch.

The American netminder won 10 of his last 11 starts to close out the season while posting a 1.54 GAA and .941 save percentage. Only one of those wins required overtime.

Vegas went 3-0 versus Dallas during the regular season but each game occurred before Jan. 1. Since then, the Stars had the third-best record in the NHL (30-12-5) while Vegas had the worst record of any postseason team (23-19-3).

I'll go out on a limb and say Game 1 was a fluke. Expect Dallas to level this series before heading to Las Vegas.

Key stat: Dallas had cashed this bet in 11 of 14 games entering the postseason.

Quick picks

Kings/Oilers over 6 goals (-112): The Kings were the second-best unders team in the NHL this year, cashing the wager in 59.6% of their games, per Scores and Odds.

All four regular season games between Edmonton and Los Angeles either pushed or went under this total, too.

But Game 1 was far from a snoozefest, and I expect more fireworks tonight.

The Oilers picked up a 7-4 victory on Monday and have now gone over or pushed this total in 11 of 13 playoff games since the start of last season (8-2-3). That includes five times in seven games against Los Angeles.

McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman have helped Edmonton average a whopping 4.12 goals per game at home this season (second-best mark in the NHL).

That trio will undoubtedly be active again tonight. I'm also not sold on Stuart Skinner. He allowed 3.68 goals per game in the playoffs last year and coughed up four in Game 1.

Picks made at 12:02 p.m. on 04/24/2024.
