Best MLB prop bets April 22: Back Angels' Reid Detmers vs. Orioles

Tonight's best bet is a play on Manny Machado, whose San Diego Padres begin a series at Coors Field.

The pregame narrative: Machado has been pedestrian but the matchup and venue are enticing. Also, I like the lights-out Reid Detmers to clear his total outs line versus the Baltimore Orioles.

Note: After this story was published, it was announced Machado is missing tonight's game and going on paternity leave.

Best bet: Machado over 1.5 total bases (-137)

Machado isn't having a great season by any means but he still has pop and is hitting a more-than-respectable .274 in April.

The problem is his lack of power. Machado is slugging .370 this month and .417 on the season, a number that would represent a career-low mark.

But what he has working in his favour tonight is Coors Field and Austin Gomber.

Gomber, the Rockies' starter on Monday, has turned in some solid starts but he also sports a career 4.90 ERA.

He has had severe home run issues and it's not like Coors Field is going to do him any favours.

The left-hander has never been a big bat-misser, either, which adds to the difficulties of pitching in the majors' most hitter-friendly park.

Gomber had a 7.25 ERA at home last year. It was 5.25 the year before. He's a major fade candidate and Machado's price point is one I can get behind.

Key stat: Machado has a 1.137 OPS versus lefties this year and had a mark of .850-plus in each of the last two seasons.

Quick pick

Detmers over 16.5 outs (-121): This is a tough assignment — the Orioles are third in MLB with a .782 OPS — but Detmers has been exceptional.

He recorded 16 outs last game and cleared this number in each of his two stars before that. The left-hander has allowed three runs over those three outings and surrendered one in his season debut.

Detmers hasn't allowed a single home run this season. He has a career-best K rate and career-low walk rate.

Check out how nasty he's been compared to his MLB peers:

  • 1.19 ERA (4th)
  • 34.9 K% (3rd)
  • 1.62 FIP (1st)

The Angels have lost four straight and played in 10 consecutive days. They could use length from Detmers tonight.
