Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev take part in a semi-final rematch at Roland-Garros.

The pregame narrative: Ruud, who made it through due to Novak Djokovic withdrawing from their quarter-final matchup, draws Zverev in a rerun of last year's semi-final. However, I expect this year's contest to have the opposite result.

Although Ruud handled Zverev in straight sets at last year's French Open, there's reason to believe this match will be much different.

Firstly, the German's entire 2022 campaign was derailed due to a major injury suffered early in the year. In his first action back, he made the semi-finals of the 2023 French Open, where he ran out of gas and lost to Ruud.

It's easy to look at that result on paper and think this time will provide much of the same — but how close to 100% was Zverev really after a year off of competition?

In 2024, the 27-year-old is in top form and should provide a much higher standard. He's 33-9 in total while playing players with an average ranking of 86.9, per matchstat.com.

Compare that to Ruud, who has seen an average ranking of 118.9 across the court from him this year.

Zverev is a much better server.

So far at Roland-Garros, he's had 45 aces and has held 84% of his service points. If he controls that part of the match while making Ruud work for every return point, it will be difficult for the Norwegian to make his mark on the game.

Last year, Ruud won six of the 10 possible breakpoints. He could only break Zverev 33% of the time in their three previous meetings, proving the 2023 semi-final had more factors besides who's the better tennis player.
