Best MLB prop bets April 16: Back Freddie Freeman and Manny Machado

All 30 teams are in action today, leading to three MLB prop picks.

The pregame narrative: I'm going back to Freddie Freeman for the second consecutive night and also have plays on Manny Machado and Tommy Henry.

Check out the best MLB prop bets for April 16.

MLB prop bets

Best bet: Machado over 1.5 total bases (+123)

The San Diego Padres third baseman is off to a so-so start following a down season that still saw him bash 30 homers.

In fact, Machado's numbers are nearly identical to 2023.

  • 2024: .263/.333/.461 (120 wRC+)
  • 2023: .258/.319/.462 (114 wRC+)

But Machado has recorded a hit in nine straight games and has four bombs on the season.

Tonight he faces 37-year-old lefty Wade Miley, who's one of the weakest starters at generating strikeouts.

Machado has faced Miley 29 times in his career and what I like even more than his .936 OPS is that he's only struck out three times.

Expect Machado to put the ball in play against a pitcher who gives up a lot of contact before getting a shot at a Brewers bullpen that has the highest home run/fly ball rate in MLB.

Key stat: Machado has cleared this number in five of his last six games.

Quick picks

Henry under 16.5 outs (-108): The left-hander has failed to top this line in each of his three starts.

Henry has to contend with a Chicago Cubs team that ranks eighth in runs per game and is second in ISO versus southpaws.

The 26-year-old is not a big swing-and-miss arm, has shaky control and has been taken deep in every start.

Henry has issued multiple walks in each outing and sports a 1.64 WHIP. That's concerning against a Cubs team that has strong power numbers against left-handers.

While the Arizona Diamondbacks used six relievers yesterday in an 11-inning loss, they got six frames out of their starters in three consecutive games before that.

Freeman over 0.5 RBI (+128): The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing Patrick Corbin tonight and I'm looking to load up.

This is a plus matchup, meaning we're facing sky-high prices on Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani as we've consistently seen this season.

But we can use those two to capitalize here. Betts (-195 to score) and Ohtani (-162) are hitting in front of Freeman and both get on base frequently.

Ohtani has a .384 OBP and Betts is sixth in MLB with a mark of .462. They are both hitting well north of .300.

The Washington Nationals lefty has an 8.44 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and has allowed seven-plus hits and four-plus runs in each start.

Corbin has the highest ERA among qualified starters since 2021 and has surrendered the second-most homers.

This is a lefty-lefty matchup that doesn't concern me in the slightest, and Freeman has good splits versus southpaws anyway.

I'm looking for multiple ways to back the Dodgers' potent bats. Other L.A. hitter prop recommendations:

  • Teoscar Hernandez over 0.5 RBI (+120)
  • Hernandez over 1.5 total bases (-103)
  • Will Smith to record an RBI (not priced at time of writing)

Picks made at 12:58 p.m. ET 04/16/2024.
