MLB parlay picks April 17: Bet on Guardians' bats to stay hot
Cleveland is averaging 5.7 runs per game so far this season (fifth in MLB). Photo by Ron Schwane/AP.

It's getaway day for many teams in baseball, but I'm leaning in on the only three evening games to build this MLB parlay.

The pregame narrative: This ticket is all about the totals. I'm taking an alt under in a pair of matchups tonight and combining that with the over for the Cleveland Guardians' team total.

Check out my MLB parlay picks for April 17.

MLB parlay picks

Parlay: Rockies/Phillies under 9.5 runs + Angels/Rays under 9.5 runs + Guardians over 3.5 runs (+283)

Rockies/Phillies under 9.5 runs (-235): Bryce Harper is hitless in 12 of 17 games so far and Nick Castellanos has failed to record an extra-base hit. That should give you some sense of where the Philadelphia Phillies' offence is right now.

The Phillies have an 82 wRC+ as a team, which ranks 25th in the majors. Right below them are the Colorado Rockies (80 wRC+).

Both teams average fewer than 4.0 runs per game, and they've combined for just eight total runs through two games in this series. I don't foresee an offensive explosion tonight.

Last season, Rockies starter Ryan Feltner tossed 5.2 scoreless innings on the road in Philadelphia.

As for Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez, all three of his outings hit this under.

Other parlay picks

Angels/Rays under 9.5 runs (-195): Last night's matchup between these teams was 3-1 entering the ninth inning. Then some weirdness ensued, and the game ended with 13 total runs in 13 innings.

The bats struggled for most of the night, though, and I could see that game script playing out again on Wednesday.

Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers has cruised through three starts, allowing just two runs over 17.1 innings while fanning 26. He no-hit the Tampa Bay Rays two seasons ago and has held the current lineup to a .286 SLG, per Baseball Savant.

Zack Littell goes for Tampa, and he's been great since converting to a full-time starter last summer.

Since then, he has a 2.95 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 14 starts. He faced the Angels a week ago, allowing one run over 4.1 innings in an eventual 4-2 win for the Rays.

Guardians over 3.5 runs (-134): The Guardians are typically known as a soft-hitting team that fares well with pitcher development. But so far, with some starters on the shelf, Cleveland has stepped things up offensively.

Cleveland ranks fifth in the majors in runs per game (5.7) and has topped this total in 13 of 17 matchups so far.

Tanner Houck, who gets the ball for the Boston Red Sox, was roughed up last time out (seven runs, 12 hits, 5.2 innings).

So far at Fenway Park, the Guardians have scored 16 runs through two games. This is a modest total for a team that's in a groove.

Picks made at 12:10 p.m. on 04/17/24.
