Canada's tournament odds

Canada enters as a massive long shot to make it out of the group stage, let alone win the tournament.

That makes sense considering who the Canadians are going up against. They begin the tournament against Lionel Messi and top-ranked Argentina before taking on Peru and Chile.

The top two teams qualify out of each group for the knockout stage and Canada has -335 odds to bow out after the three round-robin matchups.

It's clear the Reds are underdogs. Can they harness that mentality to prove the soccer world wrong? We'll find out soon enough.

Team trends: Marsch on

Canada began 2023 with three straight wins in the Nations League before losing 2-0 to the United States in the tournament final.

That loss kicked off a tough stretch for the team.

Head coach John Herdman publicly critiqued Canada Soccer for a lack of funding and the team went 2-3-2 for the remainder of the year after losing in the Nations League final. Herdman eventually left Canada for TFC in August.

Jesse Marsch took the job on May 13 after Canada had already qualified for Copa America with a caretaker manager.

Marsch has only been in charge for a month and change and the Reds have had mixed results. They got blown out 4-0 by the Netherlands but also netted one of their most impressive results in a while: A scoreless tie against France.

Sure, it was a pre-tournament friendly — but we're not talking about Les Bleus' B-team.

Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembélé and Ngolo Kante all played, among other starters.

Canada couldn't muster up much offence but had an impressive 49% possession share. It was a breath of fresh air for a struggling side and is a very encouraging sign ahead of Thursday's match with Argentina.

Roster breakdown and players to watch

Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David are Canada's top dogs.

The duo was instrumental in securing a World Cup qualification in 2022 and both players are coming off impressive seasons for their European clubs, Bayern Munich and Lille.

Davies was a mainstay on the Bavarians' back end, factoring in on eight goals while starting 34 games. David scored 15-plus goals for a third consecutive season, establishing himself as one of the best young strikers in Europe.

David ranks second all-time in goals scored for Canada (26) and first in goals per game (0.54). Davies is more of a creator but still has a respectable 15 goals in 47 caps.

But the efforts of Cyle Larin shouldn't be ignored.

He's Canada's top all-time scorer with 29 goals in 68 caps, and he scored the game-winning goal in Canada's Copa America playoff against Trinidad and Tobago.

Stephen Eustaquio and Ismael Kone headline a midfield that is stronger than often given credit. They'll have to have a strong tournament for the Canadians to get the ball up into the attacking third.

In goal, Maxime Crepeau has been really solid.

He turned away Mbappe in a critical moment in Canada's 0-0 draw and will likely have his work cut out for him against Argentina.

Canada Copa America betting preview: Individual matchups

Here are the odds for Canada's first two matchups as of June 18:

DateSide ADrawSide B
June 20Argentina -305+500Canada +900
June Peru +210+215Canada +140

Argentina is FIFA's top-ranked team and is 13-0-1 since winning the World Cup two years ago.

The team has world-class talent throughout the lineup and is headlined by Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez and Julian Alvarez.

It's not a surprise that Canada is a massive underdog in the match, but it is worth noting Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in its opening match of the World Cup as a hefty favourite.

Canada is a slight favourite over Peru, FIFA's No. 32 ranked team.

The Peruvians enter on solid form and are unbeaten in their last five games (3-2-0), conceding just two goals in that stretch.

Finally, Canada will take on Chile, though the odds aren't available for that matchup just yet.

Chile is ranked 42nd and has been filling the net lately. They won 3-0 against both Paraguay and Albania in 2024 and found the net twice against France in a 3-2 loss.

None of these matches will come easy for Canada, but the last two are certainly winnable.
