Best Olympic men's basketball odds
The favourites: USA
The United States has begun its tournament with convincing wins over Nikola Jokic's Serbia and South Sudan.
Behind James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, it's clear to see why the Americans are the team to beat.
The squad has nine players who were selected to the NBA's first, second or third team this season. And all 12 are multi-time all-stars.
If you're stunned by the odds of the four-time reigning Olympic champs... don't be.
Canada's Olympic odds
The Canadians pose the biggest threat to the Avenger-like USA squad.
They started their tournament with a near collapse against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Greek squad before winning 86-79. They followed it up with a more convincing win against the Australians 93-83.
On the plus side, Canada has the second-shortest odds to win the Olympic men's basketball tournament.
On the downside, due to the strength of the Americans, Canada is still on the outside looking in at 9-to-1.
But hopes are high that Canada, playing in the Olympics for the first time since 2000, can at least get into the medal round for the first time since 1984. And from there, who knows?
Canada's championship hopes are fastened to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with plenty of other NBA regulars behind him.
Olympic basketball notes
- Just behind Canada with the third-shortest odds is Serbia (+1,400), a team led by Jokic, the three-time NBA MVP. The Serbs followed up their blowout loss to the Americans with a smackdown of their own, blowing out Puerto Rico 107-66. Serbia's final game comes against South Sudan on Aug. 3.
- The host nation France (+2,000) hasn't shown dominance like many would have expected. It took a stellar performance from Victor Wembanyama to take down Brazil 78-66. It then needed a Matthew Strazel desperation 3-pointer to force overtime against Japan, eventually winning 94-90.
- Germany (+1,700) lacks NBA brand recognition, but the squad is coming off a FIBA World Cup title. In Paris, it kicked off the competition by taking down Japan 97-77, before an 86-73 win over Brazil.
