Raptors odds to draft Bronny James

Toronto Raptors (+2,000)

There's been a ton of debate and speculation about James' prospect pedigree, so it shouldn't come as a big surprise that he didn't hear his name called on Wednesday.

Toronto elected to use its first-round pick on Butler guard Ja'Kobe Walter at No. 19 overall.

That doesn't mean the Raptors are out on James, whose defensive abilities may be attractive enough to overcome his perceived offensive limitations.

The Bronny-to-Toronto chatter was, after all, created by none other than James' agent Rich Paul, who recently told ESPN, "[Raptors president] Masai [Ujiri] loves him."

While James never worked out for Toronto, neither did Walter, which didn't stop the Raptors from taking him.

"They could take him without even seeing him at 31," Paul said, referring to the Raptors. "Workouts aren't everything for these teams."

Raptors assistant general manager Dan Tolzman admitted that they're looking at Bronny — alongside basically everyone else in the draft:

Best odds to land James

The favourite: Lakers (-335)

The Lakers are the obvious favourites and are now the odds-on choice to land the former USC guard.

Los Angeles, like every team, had a chance to take Bronny last night but chose to use its No. 17 overall pick on Tennessee's Dalton Knecht.

The Lakers have the No. 55 overall pick today and it's widely assumed they are interested in using it on Bronny.

A pact with the Lakers would surely sweeten the deal for LeBron to stay in L.A. The four-time MVP has a player option that he must accept or decline by June 29.

LeBron has played his last six seasons with the Lakers, who were one of two teams to give Bronny a workout.

Bronny James draft notes

  • James averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists across 25 games at USC. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound guard missed the first eight games of the season recovering from a cardiac arrest he suffered in the summer.
  • During the combine, James recorded the third-highest max vertical jump (40.5 inches), while also recording the 10th-quickest three-quarter sprint time (3.09 seconds).
