The Midsummer Classic has arrived.
The pre-game narrative: Paul Skenes seemingly has the NL Rookie of the Year award on lock and will start for the visitors against a stacked American League lineup. The National League snapped its nine-game losing streak last year and is a slight favourite.

Forget about NL Rookie of the Year, Skenes has his sights set on the NL Cy Young now.
The Pittsburgh Pirates ace is third on the odds board at +500 and has a 1.90 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 11 starts. That would rank second and third in MLB had Skenes had enough innings to qualify.
Most recently, Skenes racked up 11 strikeouts over seven no-hit innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Now he'll be tasked with navigating a lineup likely starting with Gunnar Henderson, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.
Each of those players has 20-plus home runs and an OPS above .950.
Corbin Burnes will be the American League starter. He ranks third among qualified pitchers in ERA (2.43) and 14th in WHIP (1.04).
Shohei Ohtani (DH) headlines an NL starting lineup featuring three Philadelphia Phillies — Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Alec Bohm — and Fernando Tatis.
Skenes has a 98th percentile (34.8%) K rate, per Baseball Savant, while Burnes ranks in the 93rd percentile for hard-hit rate (30.9) and 80th percentile in ground ball rate (49.6).
Pitchers in the Midsummer Classic don't tend to go deep — there are plenty of other great arms to deploy — but those two are capable of keeping even the most elite bats at bay.
All-Star Game notes
- The total is set at 7.5 and is shaded toward the under. Four straight all-star games have gone under this number, as well as have six of the last seven.
- The American League had won nine straight all-star games prior to last year's 3-2 defeat to the National League.
- Four of the last six all-star games have been decided by one run.
