The time is drawing near for Canada to take part in the 2024 Paris Summer Games — and hopefully win a bunch of medals, too.

The latest: Canada came away with 24 total medals, including seven gold, at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games. The country's projected totals for gold and overall medals are in a similar range this time around.

Here are the latest Canada Olympic gold medal odds for the Paris Games beginning on July 26.

Canada put forth a stellar effort at the Tokyo Olympics, posting the second-highest sum of total medals (24) and gold medals (seven) that it's ever had at a Summer Games.

The high-water mark came at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, which was boycotted by 14 Eastern Bloc countries. So with that in mind, it'd be fair to say the 2020 medal haul was Canada's best ever.

For Paris, the bar is set slightly lower for Canada. In terms of gold medals, history would suggest that even a line of 5.5 might be a touch lofty.

Prior to the Tokyo Olympics, Canada collected four or fewer gold medals in six consecutive Summer Games.

New heroes emerge in every Olympiad, but Canada will surely want some of its previous champions to hold serve atop the podium.

But if you review the sources of Canada's gold medals from 2020, you'll see that some of those aren't likely to repeat.

Andre De Grasse, for example, sprinted to glory in the men's 200-metre race in Tokyo. But he is a +1,500 outsider to win this time around.

The Canadian women's soccer team won its first-ever gold in penalties during the previous Olympics but holds +2,000 odds to win again.

Two newfound sources of golden hope have emerged for the Paris Games, though: the men's basketball team and a breakdancing (or, "breaking") star.

Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray, Canada's men's basketball team has the second-shortest odds to win gold (+800). The only problem is that Team USA is an overwhelming favourite.

Meanwhile, Philip "B-Boy Phil Wizard" Kim gives Canada its best chance at winning gold in the Olympic debut of breaking. Kim has +225 odds to win, which is the second-shortest in the field.

Canada should also have a strong result in the men's decathlon. Reigning Olympic champion Damian Warner placed second at the world championships last year, bested only by fellow Canadian Pierce LePage.
