Best Olympic women's basketball odds
The favourites: USA (-1,000)
Caitlin Clark's exclusion from the U.S. national team raised a lot of eyebrows. But it was also a demonstration of how deep the Americans' talent pool is.
Even with the NCAA's all-time leading scorer (and this year's WNBA No. 1 overall pick) sitting at home, USA is an overwhelming favourite to win gold in Paris.
USA's -1,000 odds equate to a 90.9% implied probability. Entering these Summer Games, the Americans have won gold in seven consecutive Olympic tournaments.
The squad heading to Paris is led by a pair of two-time WNBA MVPs: A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. Defensively, the star is 6-foot-9 forward Brittney Griner.
As with the men's side, the U.S. women's team has an overwhelming selection of players to choose from. Perceived snubs are inevitable, but the final roster was always going to look golden — and it does.
Canada's Olympic odds
Canada (+5,000)
Considering Canada has never medalled in Olympic women's hoops, backing the team to win it all is quite a titanic ask.
In 2020, Canada finished 9th at the Tokyo Summer Games. The team's only medal-round appearance came back in 1984.
Canada did see an encouraging result at last year's FIBA AmeriCup, claiming the bronze medal. But that tournament is nothing like the Olympics (for instance, USA went with an all-college roster).
Kia Nurse and Bridget Carleton figure to lead the way, but Canada's official roster hasn't been announced yet.
Olympic basketball notes
- Australia is tied for the second-shortest odds but still sits at a lofty 15-to-1 on this futures market. What makes the Aussies interesting is that they have seven active WNBA players — the most of any non-U.S. country. Australia finished third at the 2022 World Cup and is ranked No. 3 in the FIBA women's rankings.
- China (+2,500) had a surprise early exit at the '20 Summer Games despite going 3-0 in group play. Since then, the team has finished runner-up at the '22 World Cup — losing in the final to USA — and first at the '23 Asia Cup. China is No. 2 (behind USA) in the FIBA women's rankings.
