Canada takes on Germany for a chance to compete for a medal in the Olympic women's soccer tournament.

The pregame narrative: The Canadians won all three group games to qualify for the quarterfinals in spite of a six-point deduction for a drone spying scandal. They're slight underdogs to advance but I'm riding with the reigning champs.

Best bet: Canada to advance (+110)

Saying the Canadians had to deal with adversity to get here would be an understatement.

Self-inflicted adversity? Sure, but adversity nonetheless.

FIFA handed head coach Bev Priestman, along with two assistants, a one-year ban from all soccer-related activities on top of the point deduction.

But Andy Spence has done the most in his short tenure as interim coach.

Canada took down France, FIFA's No. 2 ranked team, with a 102nd-minute winner and then followed that up with a tidy 1-0 win over Colombia on Matchday 3.

Now it has to beat Germany who sits fourth in FIFA's rankings.

The Germans had a turbulent group stage, beating Australia 3-0 but also losing to USA 4-1. Each of the team's last nine games has had three-plus goals scored so a barn burner wouldn't be out of the question.

Canada has the firepower to keep up with Germany. Janine Beckie, Jordan Huitema and Nichelle Prince are a formidable attacking trio and Jessie Fleming is one of the tournament's best midfielders.

But the team's defence is what should get the job done.

The Canadians haven't conceded more than a goal in seven straight games. They're 6-1-0 in that stretch. And outside of two games against the United States — who is this program's bogeyman — Canada hasn't given up two goals in over a calendar year.

Key stat: Canada is 16-1-1 in its last 18 games against everyone not named the United States since August 1, 2023.
