Betting insights
- Can the Pirates make a playoff push? They won six of their final seven games before the all-star break and now sit 1.5 games out of a wild-card spot. Dating back to last season, the Pirates and Phillies are 5-5 in their head-to-head matchups.
- The Yankees are among the heaviest moneyline favourites on Friday, with Cole (2-1, 5.40 ERA) matching up against Rays righty Zach Eflin (5-6, 3.99 ERA). Cole, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, has held Tampa's current lineup to a 40-for-194 (.206) batting line and a 29.4% K rate.
- Coming out of the break, the Mariners/Astros series is the one to watch. A month ago, the Mariners held a 10-game lead in the AL West ... but the surging Astros are now just one game behind. Seattle has gotten the better of this divisional matchup so far, though, winning five of seven games this year.
