Two leadoff hitters, Jose Altuve and Anthony Volpe, are featured in today's MLB prop bets.
The pregame narrative: Altuve is off to a blazing start and sees a nice price to score against the Chicago Cubs. In the lone evening game on Thursday's schedule, I'm backing Volpe to score against a struggling left-hander from the Oakland Athletics.

Best bet: Altuve over 0.5 runs (+100)
The Houston Astros are off to a horrendous start, but it's definitely not Altuve's fault.
All the veteran second baseman has done is lead the AL in batting average (.350) while slugging .602 through 25 games.
If you're an average leadoff hitter with even-money odds to score, you'll have my attention. But Altuve is among the best in the league and should be well worth a play at this price.
Houston's inadequacies are primarily on the mound, not at the plate. The Astros rank fourth in wRC+ (115) and they have the lowest strikeout rate in the majors (17.2%).
Altuve doesn't walk a ton, but his contact quality — paired with ample power — more than makes up for that. Despite a league-average walk rate (8.8%), he's in the 97th percentile in wOBA (.443).
Cubs starter Javier Assad has a 2.11 ERA through four starts, but I'll gladly take my chances with Altuve riding a hot streak atop one of the most potent lineups in baseball.
Key stat: In his past 10 games, Altuve is batting .356 with seven runs scored.
Quick pick
Volpe over 0.5 runs (-112): The New York Yankees should rake tonight against Alex Wood, and that makes Volpe a nice bet to score.
New York's leadoff man has a 137 wRC+ this season and has scored in half of his 24 games. He also has the platoon advantage against the left-handed Wood:
- Volpe vs. LHPs (170 PAs): .811 OPS, 11.8% BB rate, 128 wRC+
- Volpe vs. RHPs (536 PAs): .645 OPS, 7.8% BB rate, 81 wRC+
Wood has a 7.89 ERA this season through five starts. The opposing leadoff hitter has scored in each of them.
