Peru vs. Canada Copa America best bet: Bet on offence as Reds look to rebound

Canada searches for its first-ever Copa America win when it takes on Peru this Tuesday.

The pregame narrative: The Reds look to rebound from Thursday's 2-0 loss to Lionel Messi and Argentina and are favoured to do so. Canada played a wide-open game its last time out and I'm backing both teams to score as my best bet.

Peru vs. Canada prediction

Best Bet: Both teams to score (-106)

Canada showed some flashes of real quality against the reigning World Cup and Copa America champions in its opener.

Jesse Marsch's squad was predictably out-possessed by Messi and Co. but generated 1.16 expected goals on 10 shot attempts, per TheAnalyst. That wasn't enough to get the team on the board but the chances were certainly there.

It's due time for the Reds to finally score a goal under Marsch's tenure. Outside of Thursday's 2-0 loss to Argentina, the team also drew France 0-0 and lost 4-0 to the Netherlands.

That's not exactly encouraging but Peru is nowhere near the level of those three teams, which are ranked first, second and seventh, respectively by FIFA.

Jonathan David is coming off a 26-goal season for Lille in Ligue 1 and Alphonso Davies is a mainstay on a powerhouse Bayern Munich side.

Those two were noticeable early and often against Argentina and I expect them to be more clinical against a Peruvian team which doesn't have quite as many superstars on the back end.

That said, I also don't expect Canada to blank its opponents.

The team was willing to play a high-octane style against Argentina and that almost worked to its benefit. But it didn't. The reigning champs were knocking at the door from the opening minutes and had two breakaways due to lapses in Canada's defence.

Argentina generated 2.98 expected goals and had 19 shots — nine of which found the target.

I expect another back-and-forth affair which will have both sides finding the back of the net.

Key stat: Canada's seven first-half shots against Argentina were the most generated against the team since Uruguay in 2021.
