Qinwen Zheng and Donna Vekic meet in the gold medal match of the women's singles tennis tournament at the Paris Olympics.

The pregame narrative: After defeating Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, Zheng is my pick to win convincingly against Vekic and claim a gold medal in tennis for China.

Best bet: Zheng -3.5 games (-117)

Zheng was the first person to defeat Swiatek in straight sets since March. The Polak played 31 matches in the span.

Additionally, Swiatek has only lost three matches in straight sets all year, so Zheng winning in that fashion is definitely worth noting.

It wasn't like Swiatek was injured, either. She went on to win the bronze medal in straight sets, as she typically does, just a day later.

Zheng came into the Paris Summer Games in as strong of form as anyone. She won the Palermo Ladies Open in July and has climbed up to the No. 7 spot in the WTA rankings.

The 21-year-old is strongest on clay, going 16-4 in 2024 while holding a career record of 86-25 on the surface.

In contrast, Vekic is 8-4 on clay in 2024 and 67-54 all-time. There is a clear advantage for Zheng on this court and I believe we are witnessing the breakout of one of the best players in the world.

Key stat: Zheng has covered this spread in four of her five matches at the Olympics.

Quick pick

Under 21.5 games (-120): For many of the same reasons listed above, I also like the game total under in the gold medal match.

Vekic has faced weaker competition heading into Saturday's final. In the semis, she was gifted the 67th-ranked player in the world, Anna Schmiedlova, and won in straight sets. In the final, I think Vekic will be thoroughly outmatched.

Even if I'm drastically wrong, this wager provides a bit of insurance in case there's a blowout in either direction.
