After a straight-sets victory at the Paris Summer Games, Canada's Leylah Fernandez is through to the third round to face Germany's Angelique Kerber.
The pregame narrative: Fernandez is favoured over Kerber, who gritted her way to a three-set victory in the second round. The 16th-seeded Fernandez has already reached new heights at the Olympic level after bowing out in the second round at Tokyo 2020.

Playing against someone with nothing to lose can be a dangerous thing, and that's the situation Fernandez is in on Tuesday.
Kerber, 36, announced before the Olympics that this tournament will be her last as a singles player. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist and former WTA No. 1 player has enjoyed a stellar career that includes three Grand Slam victories.
The only slam Kerber wasn't able to win was the French Open, though. And Roland Garros just so happens to be the venue for these Olympic Games.
This season, Kerber is 9-14 overall and 5-3 on clay.
Fernandez, meanwhile, is 20-15 this year and 6-5 on clay. She advanced to the third round at Roland Garros in this year's French Open before being ousted by world No. 16 Ons Jabeur.
Back in 2021, Fernandez defeated Kerber in three sets (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) at the U.S. Open in their lone head-to-head matchup.
Fernandez is a solid favourite this time around, and a straight-sets victory is very much in play.
